Protecting Communities

Flooding is the costliest natural disaster. In Canada, an average of $2.9 billion is spent every year repairing damage to homes caused by fluvial, pluvial, and coastal flooding. The distribution of losses is particularly concentrated in homes exposed to the highest levels of flood hazard. The 10% of homes at greatest risk experience 90% of all losses.

Many homeowners at risk cannot access overland flood protection. Our home flood risk assessments help the average homeowners reduce their flood risk.

What is a
Flood Risk Assessment?

A Flood Risk Assessment and Maintenance includes:

  • Overland flood risk assessment

    • Location of the home relative to the floodplain and nearest flood elevation.

    • A comparison of the home location relative to local drainage

      • Low points, neighboring drainage, catch basins, etc.

        • Where will water accumulate in a rainstorm?

    • Assessment of the lot grading. Confirm that the 2m apron around the home sloped away from the home.

    • Inspection of downspouts

  • NASSCO Certified (BSDI) Building Sewer & Drain Inspection

    • Inspection of sewer lateral

  • Inspection and maintenance of flood defense measures

    • Inspection and cleaning of backflow valve

    • Inspection and testing of sump pump and backup systems

About Us

Since 2020, Louis Poirier (PhD) has been focused on improving flood resiliency for Canadians. He has worked with several Canadian municipalities to study the performance of their storm and sanitary storm sewer systems. This work has helped municipalities to better prioritize the spending of their limited infrastructure dollars.

Louis has worked with small businesses, universities, governments and non-profit organizations to test the performance of homes and flood protection measures in extreme flood conditions. He built a full scale model home in a laboratory basin and flooded it to better understand how to protect a home from flooding. He is also working with the CSA on two standards to better protect all Canadians from flood damages.

Let Pear Tree Flood Control Services put this expertise to work for you and book a home flood risk assessment today.
